프랑스 현대작가로서는 전세계 가장 많은 미술관에 작품이 소장되어있는 레이노는 빨간색의 화분을 통해 널리 대중에게 알려진 작가입니다.

작가의 대표작으로 자리매김한 화분 작업은 1960년대에 시작하여 오늘날까지 대중에게 가장 사랑 받는 작품으로 삶과 죽음의 필연적 관계를 일상의 오브제를 예술적 오브제로 만든 대표적인 개념미술작업이기도 합니다.

빨간색의 화분은 이후 다양한 색깔을 입혀서 원형화분에서 예술적 오브제로 변형해왔는데 1993년 북경 자금성안에 생존작가로서는 최초로 대형황금화분을 설치함으로써 전세계적인 명성을 얻는 계기가 되었고 파리 퐁피두센터 광장에 오랜 기간 설치됨으로써 널리 대중에게 현대미술을 대중친화적 오브제로 만드는데 기여하였습니다.

그의 작품은 국내에도 일찍이 소개되어 과천 국립현대미술관을 비롯해 경주 선재미술관, 부산 광안리, 통영 국제조각공원, 김포 국제조각공원 등에 소장되어 있습니다.

본 전시는 그의 대표작인 빨강화분작품을 필두로 차가운 오브제로서의 타일을 이용한 작업, 타일에 빨간 페인트를 뿌려 입힌 타일회화 작업, 1993년 베니스 비엔날레 프랑스관을 대표했던 신석기 시대의 유골을 타일에 전사한 작품, 현대회화를 역설적으로 표현한 페인트통이란 오브제를 이용한 회화작업 그리고 이번 전시를 통해 작가가 최초로 공개하는 새로운 작업으로 원형 표적판에 산탄총으로 총을 발사해서 총알자국을 만들어낸 <발사> 작업등이 전시됩니다.

일상의 오브제를 예술작품으로 등장시킨 누보 레알리즘이 탄생한지 어언 50년, 아르망, 세자르 등과 함께 작가 레이노는 현대미술사에 커다란 족적을 남긴 대표적인 작가로서 현재까지 왕성한 활동을 통해 일상의 오브제를 가장 급진적이면서 단순화된 형태를 통해 예술적 오브제로 승화시키는 작업을 계속하고 있는 작가입니다.

Jean Pierre Raynaud (1939~) has been one of the greatest French contemporary artists for over half a century. With the emergence of post-canvas movement in the early 1960s, Raynaud joined the contemporary art circles and pioneered a new chapter in the history of French contemporary art with leading artists like Yves Klein, Jean Tinguely, Arman, etc.  

Raynaud’s works are quite conceptual. From transforming everyday objets into artistic objets, the essence of his works is profoundly inspired by purity of objets. The inevitability of life and death is deeply rooted in Raynaud’s artistic universe. As much as invigorating life, the fate of death also cohabits his works in colors of red, and his artistic life controlled and restrained to the extreme is revealed metaphorically through his white tile works, whereas the absurdity and irregularities of modern society are coherently brought to light with psychological objet series of no-entry signs.  

When coming face to face with the grand master in his 80s, who speaks out loud about his art with so much passion, one can see that his blue eyes are brimming with unwavering passion for creation; and when listening to his philosophy in life, one cannot help but think he is indeed a natural-born artist. As his life rejects secular compromises and exists solely through art, the artist’s life resembles the art he practices.

This exhibition presents Raynaud’s iconic work red Pot and the works using tiles as blunt, cold and close-to-nothing objets, tile-painting works spraying red paint over tiles, a work representing the French pavilion during the Venice Biennale in 1993 of the Neolithic human remains transcribed onto tiles, as well as paintings using paint bucket paradoxically representing modern painting. Moreover, the most recent work being disclosed to the public for the first time is <Shoot> representing bullet marks made by the artist himself firing a shotgun at a circular target board. The exhibition will showcase the long, collective journey of one of the greatest French contemporary artists of our times.
