1959년 프랑스태생의 자멜 타타는 셍테티엔느 미술학교를 졸업한 후 화가의 길을 걸어온 프랑스 현대회화의 대표작가이다. 그의 작업은 군더더기 없는 순수회화의 정수를 보여준다. 서구 전통회화에서 깊은 영감을 받은 그의 작업은 인물화에 집중되어 있다. 그의 회화는 선과 면 중심의 절제된 선처리와 정제된 색채의 사용이 특징인데, 캔버스라는 공간을 사고와 명상의 공간으로 폭넓게 사용하여 인물을 철학적으로 배치하는 것이 작업의 특징이다. 그의 작품 속 대부분의 인물은 침묵에 잠긴 고독한 표정과 포즈로 일관된다. 작가는 침묵하는 고독한 남녀의 모습을 통해 현대사회의 단면과 사회적 모순을 지적하고 있다.

1990년대 이후 프랑스회화를 이끌어온 대표작가로서 왕성한 작업활동과 병행하여 현재 파리국립미술학교 에콜데보자르의 교수로 재직중이다.

Born in France in 1959, Djamel Tatah is a representative artist in French modern painting, who has been a painter since graduating from Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Etienne. His works show the essence of pure painting devoid of any unnecessity. Inspired by Western traditional paintings, his works are focused on figure paintings. His paintings feature use of understated lines and refined colors mainly in lines and faces, and philosophical positioning of figures by widely utilizing the canvas as space for thinking and meditation. Most of the figures in his works are consistent in expressions and poses that are silent and solitary. The artist points out social contradiction and a section of modern society through his paintings of silent and solitary men and women.

As a representative artist who has been leading French painting since the 1990’s, he works vigorously on his artworks while teaching as a professor at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
