박신영 : 빛의 추상

조각가 박신영은 <빛의 추상 (The Abstraction of Light)>이라는 주제로 9월 2일부터 11월 21일까지 갤러리 508에서 평면설치작업을 선보인다.

10년이 넘게 해온 작업들을 처음으로 선보이는 이 전시는, 긴 침묵 끝에 길어 올린 깊이와 묵직한 울림을 전한다. 이화여대 미대 조소과를 졸업하고, 제2회 광주비엔날레 청년 정신전, 젊은 모색전 (국립현대미술관), 한국현대미술 독일순회전 (국립현대미술관), 대구 아시아 미술제, Lart active (foundation Lesur, 프랑스), June peinture (그랑 팔레, 파리), 신인과 거장전 (그랑 팔레, 파리), 한국현대미술전 (루드비히미술관, 독일), 한국현대미술전 (세계예술의집, 베를린), Biennal de sulture 아트컨템퍼리전에서 대상을 수상하였다.

박신영의 이번 전시에서 드러나는 비현실적이고 몽환적인 빛은 우리의 시야 속에서 분명하고도 존재감 있게 다가온다. 모호하지만 빛에 양감을 부여한 듯한 이 빛들은 색의 덩어리로 호흡한다. 탐미하듯 빛의 숨결들이 눈의 움직임 속에서 진동하고, 우리의 시지각을 뒤흔든다. 밀도 있는 색과 흐린 농도의 색들이 환영 속에서 부유한다. 금테를 두른 우아한 색들 사이에 질량이 없는 대기가 있다.

빛의 추상은 1993년 빛을 부여한 조각으로부터 시작하여 LED 작업, 평면설치작업으로 전개되었다. 영혼의 빛을 찾아가는 여정 속에서 나온 빛들은 심연으로부터 시작되어, 박신영의 추상적 빛은 꿈을 꾸고 있는 대기와 같다. 작가가 존재함의 이유를 예술에서 찾는 것과 같은 정신적 맥락이다. 미지에서 시작되고 미지로 끝나는 매혹적인 빛의 색감들은 텅 빈 충만함으로 우리의 시선을 붙잡는다.

Park Sinyoung, a sculptor whose practice spans both Korea and abroad, presents her exhibition The Abstraction of Light at Gallery 508 from September 2 to November 21. This exhibition features a series of flat installation works that she has developed over more than a decade, now unveiled for the first time. These works, long held in silence, carry a profound depth and a quiet yet powerful resonance.

A graduate of Ewha Womans University’s Department of Sculpture, Park has participated in numerous significant exhibitions, including the 2nd Gwangju Biennale’s “Spirit of Youth,” Young Korean Artists 1996 (National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea), Korean Contemporary Art German Tour (MMCA), Daegu Asian Art Festival, Lart Active (Foundation Lesur, France), June Peinture and Newcomers & Masters (Grand Palais, Paris), Korean Contemporary Art (Kunstmuseum Mülheim, Germany), Korean Contemporary Art (Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin), and received the Grand Prize at the Biennal de Sulture Art Contemporaine.

The light that emerges in Park’s work is surreal and dreamlike—uncertain yet undeniably present. These forms of light, ambiguous but volumetric, breathe like dense masses of color. Their subtle pulses resonate through the movement of the eye, shaking the viewer’s visual perception. Rich tones and hazy hues float within a hallucinatory atmosphere, while golden-edged colors seem suspended in weightless air.

The Abstraction of Light began with her light-integrated sculptures in 1993 and has since evolved through LED works and into her current flat installations. The lights in these works are born from a journey in search of the soul’s light, originating from a place of deep introspection. Park’s abstract light resembles an atmosphere caught in a dream—a reflection of the artist’s existential inquiry into the reason for being through art.

Beginning and ending in the unknown, these captivating spectrums of light hold our gaze with a sense of luminous fullness. They exist without form or boundary, yet possess a profound presence that defies definition.
